Veteran BJP leader and Manjalpur MLA Yogesh Patel passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80 after suffering from a prolonged heart-related illness. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Vadodara, where he breathed his last.
Born on July 23, 1946, Patel was one of Gujarat’s most experienced politicians and remained undefeated in the Manjalpur Assembly constituency for eight consecutive terms since 1990. He also served as a minister in the Gujarat government during the tenure of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
His demise has left a void in Gujarat politics and once again created a vacancy in the 182-member Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Earlier this year, the Assembly had witnessed a vacancy following the death of Umreth MLA Govind Parmar, which was later filled through a by-election.
As news of Patel’s passing spread, several senior leaders rushed to the hospital, including former MP Ranjanben Bhatt, Assembly Whip Balu Shukla, and former minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.
Bhupendra Patel and several political leaders expressed their condolences, remembering Yogesh Patel as a dedicated public representative who consistently raised people’s issues both inside and outside the Assembly.
Paying tribute, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama described Patel’s demise as a significant loss not only for Vadodara and the BJP but for the entire state of Gujarat. He recalled Patel as an active legislator, committed leader, and close colleague with whom he had worked for several Assembly terms.
Known for his strong grassroots connect, Yogesh Patel played a key role in the development of Manjalpur and Vadodara through various infrastructure, civic, and urban development projects. His political career spanned more than five decades, earning him respect across party lines.
His funeral will be held on June 4 after his son and daughter arrive from the United States.
Patel’s passing marks the end of an important chapter in Gujarat politics, leaving behind a legacy of public service, political commitment, and electoral success.
